This is the second of the two chapters introducing the fundamentals of semantics. In this chapter, we take a more detailed look at sentence meaning. We begin by discussing the semantic contribution that verbs, adjectives and prepositions make to linguistic expressions. Based on this, we then characterise the meaning of sentences more explicitly in terms of their truth values. We then discuss a range of logical relations that may hold between the meaning of sentences, and meanings that are communicated by sentences even though they are not explicitly stated.
