Chapter 8 Sentence meaning

The previous chapter discussed the grammatical rules that combine individual words into larger units (phrases and clauses). In this chapter, we will look at the meaning of such larger units, in particular, clauses.
When you’ve completed this chapter, you’ll be able to:
  • think about the meaning of sentences in a systematic way,
  • think about the relationship between sentences in a way that is analogous to the relationship between word senses, and
  • understand how sentences often presuppose information without communicating it directly.
