Linguistics An Essential Introduction

Chapter 5 Morphology

While phonology can tell us which sounds can occur in a language in what order, and even which sounds distinguish one word from another, it does not tell us anything about the meaning that various sound sequences express. The study of the various parts that comprise words and contribute to their meaning is called morphology. This chapter explores the internal structure of words, how words are comprised of smaller meaningful parts, and how some of these parts determine what word class a word belongs to, or show its function in a sentence.
When you’ve completed this chapter, you will be able to:
  • dissect words into the morphemes that they are composed of
  • write word formation rules that define how words are constructed in English, and what allomorph of a given morpheme will surface in a given context
  • categorize languages typologically based on their morphology
