{"id":418,"date":"2024-09-29T20:13:27","date_gmt":"2024-09-29T18:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linguistica.info\/b\/lei\/?page_id=418"},"modified":"2025-06-27T12:24:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T10:24:05","slug":"4-6-stress","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/linguistica.info\/b\/leiwp\/toc\/4-phonology-2\/4-6-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"4.6 Stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The phonetics of stressed syllables<\/h2>\n<p>As an organization unit, syllables play a role in the overall rhythm and flow of language, especially by having some syllables be <strong>stressed<\/strong>, which gives them more prominence in the linguistic signal. In spoken languages, stressed syllables are often articulated with some combination of increased loudness, longer duration, and\/or higher pitch.\u00a0However, languages can vary quite a lot in exactly which phonetic properties are used for stressed syllables.<\/p>\n<h2>Degrees of stress<\/h2>\n<p>In spoken languages, words can easily have many syllables, such as the English word <em>internationalization<\/em>, which has eight syllables, or the German word <em>Kraftfahrzeughaftpflichtversicherung <\/em>\u2018motor vehicle indemnity insurance\u2019, which has nine syllables. Even with just three or four syllables, there is room for multiple degrees of stress within a single word. In most spoken languages, usually there is exactly one syllable per word with the highest degree of stress, which is called <strong>primary stress <\/strong>and is marked in the IPA with an <strong>upper tick mark [ \u02c8 ] <\/strong>before the onset of the syllable with primary stress.<\/p>\n<p>All other stressed syllables can be said to have <strong>secondary stress<\/strong>, which is marked in the IPA with a <strong>lower<\/strong> <strong>tick mark [ \u02cc ] <\/strong>before the onset of the stressed syllable (note that this diacritic is distinct from the syllabic diacritic [\u02cc] which always goes <em>under <\/em>a symbol; the secondary stress mark [\u02cc] always goes <em>before <\/em>a symbol). The remaining syllables are <strong>unstressed<\/strong>, which has no dedicated IPA symbol.<\/p>\n<p>We can see all three levels of stress in the word [\u02c8b\u028c.ni\u02cch\u028c\u0261] <em>bunny<\/em> <em>hug<\/em>, which is used in Saskatchewan English to refer to a hoodie. Note that the stress marks are used as syllable boundaries, so no [.] is needed to mark a syllable boundary in a position where [\u02c8] or [\u02cc] are used. However, some linguists will still mark the syllable boundary separately, so you may sometimes see transcriptions like [\u02c8b\u028c.ni.\u02cch\u028c\u0261] instead of [\u02c8b\u028c.ni\u02cch\u028c\u0261].<\/p>\n<p>Stress is commonly marked instead with non-IPA diacritics, with accent marks over the nucleus (or over \u03c3 when discussing stress patterns across syllables generally): the <strong>acute accent [ \u02ca ] <\/strong>for primary and the <strong>grave <\/strong><strong>accent [ \u02cb ] <\/strong>for secondary, and sometimes also the <strong>breve<\/strong> <strong>accent [ \u02d8 ] <\/strong>for unstressed, if it needs to be explicitly marked. Using this system, <em>bunny<\/em> <em>hug <\/em>could be transcribed as [b\u028c\u0301nih\u028c\u0300\u0261] or [b\u028c\u0301ni\u0306h\u028c\u0300\u0261]. However, since these diacritics have other uses in the IPA (see Section 3.7\u00a0for the use of [\u02ca] and [\u02cb] as tone diacritics), they must be used carefully to avoid ambiguity.<\/p>\n<h2>Lexical versus predictable stress<\/h2>\n<p>Many spoken languages have <strong>lexical stress<\/strong>, which means that the placement of stress is mostly unpredictable and must be memorized for each word. This can create minimal pairs, such as [\u02c8t\u0251\u027eu] \u2018fast runner\u2019 versus [t\u0251\u02c8\u027eu] \u2018batter\u2019 and [\u02c8b\u025b\u026bu] \u2018basket\u2019 versus [b\u025b\u02c8\u026bu] \u2018flute\u2019 in Khowar, a Dardic language of the Indo-European family, spoken in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>In other spoken languages, stress is fully predictable based on the structure of the syllables in a word, so that two words with the same syllable structures but different phones would always have the same stress pattern. In such languages, the rules governing stress assignment can be quite complicated, and a full analysis is beyond the scope of this textbook. However, there are a few broad patterns for predictable stress in spoken languages.<\/p>\n<p>First, although most words usually have one and only one primary stress, short function words like prepositions or conjunctions might be unstressed within a sentence or larger conversation, as in <em>I\u2019m going to the store to buy milk and eggs<\/em>, where the preposition <em>to <\/em>and the conjunction <em>and <\/em>are usually unstressed. In contrast, some complex words might have multiple syllables with roughly equal primary stress, as in [\u02c8klin\u02c8\u0283e\u026avn\u0329] <em>clean-<\/em><em>shaven<\/em>, which sounds a bit odd if you try to use secondary stress on one of the first two syllables.<\/p>\n<p>Second, primary stress is nearly always on one of the first two or the last two syllables in a word. Stress on the first syllable is called <strong>initial stress<\/strong>, stress on the second syllable is called <strong>peninitial stress<\/strong>, stress on the final syllable is called <strong>ultimate stress<\/strong>, and stress on the second syllable from the end is called <strong>penultimate stress<\/strong>. In some languages, primary stress may be <strong>antepenultimate<\/strong>, on the third syllable from the end, allowing the final syllable to be invisible to stress, as if it were not there. Interestingly, we do not seem to find the equivalent of third stress from the beginning, likely because the first syllable is very psychologically prominent, and so it cannot be ignored in the same way the final syllable can be.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, secondary stress in longer words often occurs in a regular rhythm, skipping every other syllable, so that stressed and unstressed syllables generally alternate with each other. However, there is a great deal of complexity across the world\u2019s spoken languages in how secondary stress is assigned.<\/p>\n<p>But despite all the complexity, there are still some consistent generalizations. We do not seem to find spoken languages that consistently have primary stress on, say, the middle syllable of every word or the fifth syllable of every long word, nor do we find languages that consistently alternate two stressed syllables with two unstressed syllables throughout every word. This suggests that there are deeper underlying principles that govern how stress is assigned, perhaps relating to the purpose of stress.<\/p>\n<p>For example, stress might help with processing of the linguistic signal, so it should be relatively regular (to be more easily recognizable) and anchored to the boundaries of words (which are otherwise hard to determine in ordinary conversation). In other words, not all imaginable stress patterns are possible. Instead, there seems to be a small set of very specific restrictions on how stress works.<\/p>\n<h2>Stress-timed and syllable-timed languages<\/h2>\n<p><!-- BJ: Brauchen wir die Unterscheidung? In Essentials wird die ja kritisch gesehen - ich habe aber auch null Ahnung davon und kann es nicht beurteilen; ggf. k\u00f6nnten wir aber auch noch eine Einschr\u00e4nkung hinzuf\u00fcgen --><\/p>\n<p>Languages fall into two major categories based on their rhythm: <strong>stress-timed<\/strong> and <strong>syllable-timed<\/strong> <strong>languages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Stress-timed languages are characterized by the tendency for stressed syllables to occur at roughly equal intervals, regardless of how many syllables are between them. This often requires unstressed syllables to be <strong>reduced<\/strong> in order to prioritize stressed syllables. For example, in the sentence <em>The old <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wo<\/span>man lost her <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pair<\/span> of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sci<\/span>ssors<\/em> the stressed syllables (underlined) fall at regular intervals, even though the number of syllables between them varies. English and German are classic examples of stress-timed languages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"box\">What does it mean to be reduced? The short mid central vowel [\u0259], which is called <em>schwa<\/em>, is the most neutral vowel in English. So the \u201cuh\u201d sound in the first syllable of [b\u0259\u02c8n\u00e6.n\u0259] <i>banana<\/i> contains a schwa because it\u2019s unstressed, but the \u201cuh\u201d in [\u02c8b\u028c.ni] <i>bunny<\/i> has a full vowel because it\u2019s in a stressed syllable.<!-- BJ: rearranged and added transcriptions--><\/div>\n<p>In contrast, syllable-timed languages are characterized by every syllable occurring at roughly equal intervals, regardless of whether it is stressed or unstressed. As each syllable\u00a0takes roughly the same amount of time to pronounce, these languages are perceived as having an even flow.
